In this essay I am going to be analysing an micro element which is cinematography on a movie called “Obsessed” and it was directed by Steve Shill. The reason why this film or other films contain micro elements is so that they help the scenes to create meaning of the movie and to create different emotions to the audience.

The scene I am going to be analysing is very important in the film because of the tension between the main characters Sharon Charles who is played by Beyonce Knowles and Lisa Sheridan who is played by Ali Larter. The reason why I say this scene is very important is because the audience inquisitive and analytical of what was going to happen when they meet eye to eye.

In the scene there is use of high angle which shows the vulnerability of the antagonist, this is shown when she is on the ground .The effect for this connote the dominance of Beyonce which represents to the audience the power she has towards the antagonist in the scene and she also seems like she is struggling to get up. This makes the protagonist do anything to her since she was the one who put her on the ground in the first place.



There is also use of over the shoulder shot which makes the audience feel like they are part of the scene or are in the scene. This signifies the intensity between the characters because you can see the position that they are in, squashing each other on the door. By them two fighting it represents them expressing their tension towards each other, which means by the end of this scene they is going to be one of them dead because that’s how they can only sort out their differences. This makes the audience more curious because they want to see who is going to win at the end of the scene. The audiences are more likely to be passive when they are watching this film because they will be arguing with each other on who is going to make it through the fight, which makes it more thrilling to watch.

In this there is close up of the phones, scene cutting and quick snappy changes of the phone ringing. The reason why the director used scene cutting is because it makes it easier for the audience to realise who the person is calling the phone to even though they are deconstructed. The use of a close up on the phone shows the audience the person who is calling on the phone .Especially in this scene it’s very crucial because by the protagonist not answering her phone it brings constriction to the audience that’s been created by her husband because he starts to worry why she is not answering her phone. The snappy quick change makes it more interesting for the audience to watch because the audience wants to see if the person is going to answer the phone. However in this scene its whole different story because the protagonist Beyonce is being attacked by the antagonist Ali, which makes the audience want to see who is going to be the most powerful and get the phone first. This will make the audience either argue or guess with each other on who is going to pick up the phone first.




In this sequence there is use of low angle which gives a perfect view to the audience of what is happening in the scene. In this scene the protagonist Beyonce is more dominant because the antagonist Ali is powerless and defenseless to herself. This makes the audience intrusive to know what the protagonist is going to do since she is powerful in the shot. It also makes is easier for the audience to realise that she is the main character in the movie because she is mostly powerful in the scenes and shot’s. In this shot they is also a close up on Beyonce which shows her facial expressions. It connotes her feelings to the spectator and how much she is struggling to keep holding onto the antagonist since she can’t keep fighting her and holding onto her at the same time.



In conclusion i think the film created a lot of meaning using cinematography because it makes it easier for the audience to know what is going on in the scenes. This is the reason why i think micro elements are really important in the movie. I this movie the scenes makes a lot of meaning to the spectators because of the use of micro element cinematography. The movie I chose “Obsessed” is easier to pick up a lot of cinematography and it is easier to shape meaning of the use of cinematography.

How Is GENRE REPRESENTED through the micro-elements in Slumdog?

Slumdog Millionaire was released on the 9th of January in the UK and Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan directed it. It was set in Mumbai-India, Agra and Uttar Pradesh. The lead male actor is called Dev Patel and the female lead is called Freida Pinto.In Slumdog Millionaire and it is a hybrid genres and there are romance, crime, drama and bollywood. The budget of the film was $15.1 million.

In Slumdog Millionaire there is the main key scene when Jamil was covered in faeces just because he wanted to see a celebrity. The reason why he had faeces is because his brother locked him in the bathroom. In this main key scene there is use of misce en scene, for example the setting of the place that he is in automatically represent to the audience that they live in slums, also signifying that there are very poor people and they can’t afford to live in better places and conditions. I think the producer decided to show this scene in a dramatic way just to show the lengths that people can go just to see a celebrity and get an autograph. However there is also comedy in it because his autograph ends up being sold to someone else by his brother.

One of the props that they use in the movie is the toilet. The toilet signifies to the audience that they can’t afford proper toilets in other words the toilets that we use because they can’t afford it. Also the location that the toilet is on is just on a ground with lot’s of dirty/rubbish on it and the worst thing is that they pay to use toilet’s like that, since they can’t afford to built one of their own. In my own opinion the reason why the producers used this setting and props is to show the audience the lives that this people lived and make it easier for the audience to understand.

The crime genre is represented through misce en scene for example one of the characters Salim wears black clothing signifying his dark personality. Some of the crimes that Salim commit are he killed people for example the men that was abusing children by making them blind in order for him to make a lot of money because if you were blind you would get a lot of money from people and he also kidnapped a girl called Latika even though he was the love of his brothers life called Jamil. This shows the evil antagonist in an convention way through the crimes that Salim was committing. He was committing these crimes for his boss in order for him to get paid a lot of money. The reason why Salim was committing these crimes is because he wanted to make money fast since he grew up in poverty where he didn’t have any money and a house to live in since his mum was killed. This represented a dark personality because he would do anything just to make money even if it was killing people which he did. When Salim died he died in a tub full of money representing to the audience that all his life he wanted to be rich. This also represents the selfishness and unloyal that Salim was to the audience.

In this movie there another micro element and that is sound. There is a lot of non-diegetic sound since the movie includes a bit musical and a lot of dancing. The reason for this is that the other genre of this movie is bollywood and a lot of movies from India always include Indian cultural music and dancing. In Indian movies like this one the actors and actresses are wearing their cultural clothes to represent to the audience easily their culture. There is also a sound bridge when Jamil is calling his brother this is represented easily because they cross cut the scenes when the phones are ringing which makes it easier for the audience to realise who is calling who.

In Slumdog Millionaire the producers and directors made it really easy for us to realise one of the genre romance. The romance between Jamil and Latika is very difficult because there is love triangle which means that it would be very difficult for them to get together. Jamil’s brother Salim makes it impossible for them to be together because he makes another men take Latika and marry her against her wishes. She didn’t have any choice because they would always catch her or end up killing her. However fate brings them back together because they end up together after all the trouble they went through since they were very young. In this scene the director also used tracking to show the train moving very fast and to show them running, so that they can be together.

In the movie the director also used a close up shot on Latika to show us her facial expression when she is being chased by Salim and getting cut on her face because she ran away from her husband, so that she can be with Jamil the love of her life. The other cinematography that was used in this movie is high angle to show us all the dancers dancing in the movie properly and make it more entertaining for the audience. The reason why this is used is that so that the audience can see the characters clearly.

In Slumdog Millionaire there was a lot of deception and dramatic storylines for example especially from Salim to his brother Jamil even though Jamil never gave up on him which signifies that he loved his brother Salim no matter the bad things he done to him. This was very emotional to the audience because Salim was not a very good person to Jamil which made him an protagonist and obviously made Salim an antagonist which made the movie really dramatic and made the audience want to watch it more to see how the movie is going to end.

Misce En Scene:

In this sequence the actors are wearing different types of costumes for different purposes. The reason why they are wearing different costumes is that the director wants to signify to the audience the different people among themselves. For example they are people who are wearing fighting clothes, the reason for this is because they want us the audience to know straight away that they are fighting off against each other. However the main actor Jet Li is not wearing fighting clothes which can also suggest that when he went to this place he was not going there to fight but for some other purpose. Also they are people who are wearing suits which represents to the audience that they are probably business people who are betting on who is going to win the match and their clothes also signify their personalities and how rich they are.
The lightning in this sequence is artificial, so that the audience are able to see what is going on in the scene without any confusions. If they used natural lightning then I don't think the audience would be able to see what is going on in the scene.
The space is quite big because they are a lot of people within the building and you can obviously see how big it is by how much people are in there and because it is a nightclub. However the space in the the ring that's located in the middle of the nightclub is quiet small. The purpose for this is that only three people can fit in their, for example the referee and the two opponents/ the fighters. The reason why the space in the ring is small is to show the audience the tension between the two fighters and to make us feel like we are involved in the fight.
The props that have been used in this scene is boxing gloves, fists and legs representing the weapons that they use when they are fighting and to also signify to the audience that they are not specific rules to when they are beating each other.

Cinematography:

In the this scene/ video the director used mid shot for example when Jet Li refused to fight, the director used this because he wanted the audience to see the audiences facial expression and the body movements in the scene, in order for us to see their reaction to what Jet Li is saying or responding to not want to fight.
In this scene they is use of tilting in order for the audience to feel like they are in the scene and feeling the emotions that the fighters are feeling. Another purpose is that so we can see what people outside the ring are reacting to the fight.
There is also use of long shot so that we can see the way they are fighting with each other for example when they are kicking each other or when they are both on the ground. The reason for this is because the audience want to see every detail on what's going on between the two opponents.
The director also decided to use two shot so that the audience can see who is fighting who and their emotions and hatred towards each other making the audience want to see more of the movie because they will be curious to see who is going to win the fight. The other reason was so that the audience can see the conversation between the two actors for example the conversation that Jet Li is having with the person that he is holding.

The film was advertised using trailers and soundtracks, for example like "Jai Ho" by Pussycat Dolls it showed someof the clips from the movie and it was world wide.

Why do you think the film was so successful?

In my opinion I think that the movie was successful because the way there were being cruel and torturering the children and us the vulnerbility we feel when we are watching the movie. Also and maybe the show they used "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" because it's quite famous and popular aound the world.

Filming James Bond (The Poison Scene)

In the filming of James Bond (The Poison scene) we used Misce En Scene. In my group we had to use different camera angle, for example we used tinted angle and movements to the camera when we were shooting the scene when James Bond was in the toilet. The reason for this is we wanted the audience to feel like they are in the scene and can feel the emotions and what James Bond is feeling.

When editing the Poison scene we had to put non-digetic sound in the scene, so that the scenes are more interesting, make the scene more intense and dramatic. We made a meaning in our film by trying to make it original like the actual scene. We tried to copy the same camera movements and use dramatic sound like in the real scene for example use dramatic music as they used in the toilet scene.

In my own opinion I think that Hollywood is very powerful because they make some entertainment for people. If they was no Hollywood then it means that they would be no movies like action movies or sci-fi and comedy with better technologies and making fiction come to life. However there is Nollywood and Bollywood but then its not movies that everyone watches because they make it in their own language, but with Hollywood they make it in English which means there movies hs a mass audince than others that have a niche audience.

The audience are important in film industry because if the audience don't watch the movies that means the movie is not going to make a profit but lose a lot of money. The cinemas are also important or the people that screens the movies because you are not going to make a lot of money if you don't make people to pay to watch the movie rather than to buy a dvd which will not cost a lot of money. Last but not least advertising is very important because you want people to know that there has been a new movie that has been realeased in order for people to come to the cinema and watch the movie. Also if you don't advertise your movie then know one is going to watch the movie because they dont know it's been realeased.

Filming James Bond Scene

When i was re-filminhg the James Bond scene, I found it really hard because yu have to do it in scenes.Which means you have to shoot a certain scene and stop and do anopther one. The other thing I found really hard is me and Zain had to find actors, for example we had to find a teacher who is in a suit. This was hard because teachers are all busy and to find someone who has a free lesson or not doing anything is quiet hard. Overall I actually find it very funny being a director and recreating a scene from Casino Royale James Bond.

MISE EN SCENE- CLPPS

The costume that they use in the movie called Monster in Law are just casual clothes, to show us that they are not people who are struggling with their lives but pretty comfortable with it. However , Jane Fonda played by Viola Fields and Michael Vartan played by Dr Kevin Fields are rich which means they were expensive clothes because they can afford it than the rest.

At the beginning of the trailer they don’t use any lightning because its day light which means you don’t need any lightning because you can see properly. Maybe they might have used some lightning but to be honest I don’t think so because it’s unnecessary. They use a lot of candles , to make the scene romantic as they are celebrating an engagement at a party. By seeing this candles it will make it easier for the audience to understand that there is love celebration. In my opinion I think it will make it easier because a lot of candles signify something romantic and special love. When they are in the kitchen they is a light on where Charlie played by Jennifer Lopez is cooking. This makes it also easier for us to understand that she is cooking because the light as at the cooker only, not in the rest of the kitchen. So the movie director wants to make it easier for us to understand the movie, so that we can enjoy it because if he tried to complicate things then we wouldn’t understand what’s going on.

The production design for the scene at the beginning is there are in a garden and they are using props. For example they are using glasses and a jar. This scene is not complicated because you know that they are relaxing and sharing their troubles, like Charlie played Jennifer Lopez is sharing her troubles to her friends about her mother in law who is treating her badly. Jane Fonda played by Viola Fields is in a mansion and everything that is in that house is very expensive which means that she is very rich and lives a luxurious life and a higher class lady.

In the movie they uses a lot of props, for example when Viola Fields has a horn that is used to make a lot of noise. When you see the horn you just know that the character is going to use this prop in an negative way. The reason why the director made this character use this prop is to show the audience the tension between this two characters Viola and Charlie. The other prop that they use is sleeping pills, they used sleeping pills because they wanted to show the battle between them because the two of them wants to show their strengths or the strengths that they will go to in order for one of them to win.

Where the cast is there is so much space, for example the houses that they were in has a lot of space. This shows us that they are people who doesn’t struggle but there lives are comfortable for them. However the scene where Charlie and Viola are sleeping together they don’t really have much space, to show us that that there must be a reason why Viola decided to sleep with her. I think that the reason is pretty clear, she is looking for a chance to make Charlie’s life miserable because she hates her and she is cold towards her. So because of Viola’ behaviour you can just know that she is going to make her daughter in law’s life distressed.

The genre of the film called "Wolverine" is Action,Thriller, Fantasy and Sci-Fi. It was released on the 29th of April 2009. The director of the movie is called Gavin Hood and the writers of the movie are David Benioff and Skip Woods

Wolverine is not a remake of a book/comic, but then they are comic books and books of the movie. However, Wolverine is a fictional Canadian superhero mutant, possessing animal-keen senses, enhanced physical capabilities, bone claws, and a healing factor that allows him to quickly recover from virtually any wound, disease or toxin, also enabling him to live beyond a normal human lifespan.

The main notable stars are Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Danny Houston and Will i am. In the movie Hugh Jackman played by Logan/ Wolverine is a brother to Liev Schreiber, who is played by Victor Creed. Logan/Wolverine lives a mutant life, he seeks revenge against his brother for the death of his girlfriend and ends up going through the Mutant X program. The reason why he went Mutant X program is because he wanted his claws to be much stronger, so that he can defeat his brother.

The target audience of the film are people who like or into comic books and people who are in their 30s and 40s going down to about teenagers. The reason why I said teenagers it's because every teenagers likes a movie that ends up the good guys winning, which means when evil guys die at the end of the movie like what happens at the end of this movie.

In my opinion, I really find this movie very enjoyable, amusing and very interesting because I wanted Hugh Jackman who is played by Logan/Wolverine to get revenge on the people who were killing other mutants and his brother. Even though I enjoyed the movie, I didn't like the fact that Logan/Wolverine loses his memory and his girlfriend ends up dying at the end of the movie. It also seems as if at the beginning of the movie, they were rushing it so that they can get to the middle of the movie because that’s the best part of the movie. Overall, I actually found the movie very thrilling and I hope they make part two of the movie because the way it ended it seemed like it's going to be continuously.

There was some stylistic/camera techniques that inspired me, for example they used a mid-shot to show us facial expressions of Wolverine/Logan that he was furious; they wanted to erase all of his memories because they thought he was dead while they where doing an experiment on him. There was also fast tracking when Victor was running, he is a mutant and his powers are like a cheetah, which means he can run very fast.

The messages and values of the film are tolerance and multiculturalism because the mutants don't get along with each other. Instead of them acting as one, they are too busy fighting and killing each other. So the lesson we can learn from this is to get along with each other not fighting and killing each other.
